AIRPORTS: There are three DC-area airports: BWI (Maryland), Dulles (Northern Virginia), and Ronald Reagan (Northern Virginia). Reagan is the closest to Arlington, but BWI and Dulles might offer cheaper flights.
GROUND TRANSPORTATION: There are DC metro stops at Reagan and Dulles. There is an Amtrak station at BWI that can take you to Washington DC Union Station, where you can connect to the metro. Taxis and car shares will cost what they cost. For example, an Uber from Reagan straight to Arlington is about $30.
HOTELS: The Scanlan family has set up a block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn, Arlington, you can access the room block here. The cost of parking is included in the room block rate, which is valid through February 23rd. If you want to look into overall rates at the same hotel, you can check out Hilton Garden Inn, Arlington. The towns of Rosslyn, Pentagon City, and Crystal City are also adjacent to the cemetery. There are brand name hotels in all four towns and most of them will have free shuttles to and from Reagan Airport. If you are thinking of staying in Washington DC, the cemetery is about 2.5 miles by car or 4 stops by metro from downtown.
ABOUT ARLINGTON: Arlington National Cemetery runs a tight ship. They do an average of 10-12 burials per day and there is a strict timeline for each one. The cemetery opens at 8:00AM, Arlington recommends being there by 8:15AM for John’s 9:00AM service. Car traffic in the Arlington area can be extremely heavy at rush hour, so if you are not taking the metro to Arlington you should plan accordingly.
BURIAL ENTRY: You will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or a valid US passport to enter the cemetery. Here is Arlington’s general info for Attending a Funeral and the scheduled Order of Events.
